Recession Proof? Social Work Job Opportunities

Current State of Economy

It is no secret that we are living in uncertain economic times. Predictors have illustrated more significant concern than the 2008 recession, and for some of us, this will be our first time experiencing such a recession of this caliber as working citizens. Furthermore, some opportunities that involve minimum wage may not be able to sustain the current lifestyle that you're in in the next year or two. With an ongoing housing crisis and inflation, it is hard to find adequate financial opportunities. Some who may be considering a college career wonder what could be a viable opportunity during these times.

Social Work Opportunities

As I have mentioned before, the field of social work is more complex than many may make it out to be. Depending on your degree, various opportunities can be entirely sustainable for the long term. Naturally, a Ph.D. in social work will offer more compared to a Master's degree, while a master's degree will provide more compared to a bachelor's degree. Interestingly enough, a bachelor's degree in social work still offers plenty for individuals who seek employment. Before we get into the opportunities, we must discuss a couple things about the field of social work. Social work is a field that centers around ethical values. These moral values are illustrated in the NASW code of ethics. Notably, these codes of ethics are also represented through competencies that reflect a social worker's ambition to pursue knowledge relevant to current practice. In other words, as a social degree, you must be up to date on the field's new training, policies, and direction. As a constantly evolving field, there's always something you need to learn.
Most importantly, social workers aim to provide services and assistance ethically. This includes but is not limited to advocacy, finding resources, clinical therapy, etc. Ultimately, the field encompasses many opportunities that we will explore.

Bachelor's of Social Work

A bachelor's degree in social work requires a minimum of four years. Depending on the college that you attend, the curriculum may differ. What is essential to know is that you will learn the general aspects of social work during that time. This may include the core competencies and how they are applied, theoretical frameworks, intervention strategies, etc. In other words, the foundation of social work will be taught, and you will experience certain aspects of the field during that time. Upon achieving a bachelor's degree, you can apply to a specific occupation within the area. This includes child protective services, juvenile court liaison, case management, rehabilitative caseworker, eligibility worker, and community outreach worker, just to name a few. Though the start of pay may be less than 100% ideal, there are benefits to these jobs that provide other opportunities, such as insurance and flexibility. Furthermore, the opportunity to grow in this sector is almost guaranteed if one puts in the effort, and higher-paying positions are still being determined. Over time, when one has a strong resume within the field, even more benefits will follow, including a pay increase.

Masters of Social Work
A master's in social work can be completed depending on a couple factors. For one, if you had a prior degree in another field, it may take longer than if you graduated with a bachelor's degree in social work. Secondly, it also depends on the institution you are attending. Depending on the curriculum, the institution may require two or more years, while others may only need one year under certain circumstances. It is best to look over the curriculum of whatever institution you attend and verify any information obtained. A Masters's degree in social work offers a little more opportunity than its bachelor's counterpart. For instance, you will have more options in a medical setting. This includes my occupation as a medical social worker. As a medical social worker, you will be more involved with the other medical staff in an interprofessional setting. You will work with professionals from different fields, such as medical doctors, nurses, physical therapists, etc. The rule includes it is not limited to informing the team of the patient's needs outside of prognosis and diagnosis. This may consist of insurance discrepancies or discharge planning. Other opportunities include occupation as a family social worker, psychotherapy, and school social work. Notably, after one obtains their MSW, they are eligible to take a licensing exam on which successful completion allows them even further opportunities.

Ph.D. in Social Work
A Ph.D. in Social Work works similarly to a master's degree in social work because their variables determine when one may finish. Ultimately, it takes three to six years to complete a PH program. The opportunities from receiving this degree allow one to be a professor, behavior supervisor, and so on. With these opportunities come a substantial pay increase and comes with a lot of responsibility as well. By receiving the highest degree in social work, many leadership opportunities may arise, and future projects can be explored. Though there is more flexibility, achieving such a position requires passion and a strong understanding of Social Work.

Future Projections and What they Mean

By 2030, it is estimated that the overall pay for social workers will increase by 10%. What does this mean? During the pandemic, it was highlighted that the demand for social workers had increased significantly. This is especially true with the ever-changing environment in our current times. Even more so now, the topic of mental health proves to be more relevant in many different sectors. Specifically, the factors that contribute to one mental health are constantly being explored and discussed in various settings. As a result, it is not a surprise that social workers are required not only in mental health settings but in different environments that need assessments, advocacy, compassion, and ethics. From a micro dilemma, such as family conflicts, to a macro dilemma, such as a legislative conflict, social workers are there to not only bring an unbiased understanding of the issue but work to solve various problems to ensure that the needs of individuals are being met.

What does this mean for you?

The landscape of opportunities is constantly changing. Now more than ever, people are exploring opportunities that reflect their particular skill sets. Some of these skill sets may include but are not limited to business, science, math, and even arts. One area of exploration that many may need help exploring is the passion for assisting others and solving societal problems. Though countless examples illustrate a need for problem solvers in society, those who can solve those problems might need clarification on the opportunities. Based on my experience in the field, I have learned that there will always be opportunities to learn and explore social work. Many areas of life require compassion and understanding of others to solve issues. If integrity/ethics and patience reflect some of the qualities that you may have, then I insist you explore as much as you can. The opportunities we have now are entirely different from those we had back then. From remote opportunities to traveling around various parts of the country in the world, your work will be virtually limitless. Though social work can be profitable, it is crucial to value your work because, just like many other professions and the professionals in them, you may be needed and relied on. Ultimately, and though many doors can be opened, it is vital to take advantage of opportunities presented primarily if patience and compassion reflect your passion for helping others.
